Welcome to week 23. A very common answer I get from people when I ask for that one thing they want from life is HAPPINESS. But only a few understand that in order to be happy we you need to get off the HEDONIC cycle NOW. lets explore this further,
What is HEDONIC cycle ?
Ever wondered why the happiness boost you get when you attain something does not last forever? After all if it makes you that happy it, that emotion should stay with you, right!
The hedonic treadmill or hedonic cycle (also known as hedonic adaptation) is a theory positing that people repeatedly return to their baseline level of happiness, regardless of what happens to them.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau beautifully explained hedonic adaptation in his 1754 Discourse on Inequality with the following words:
“Since these conveniences by becoming habitual had almost entirely ceased to be enjoyable, and at the same time degenerated into true needs, it became much more cruel to be deprived of them than to possess them was sweet, and men were unhappy to lose them without being happy to possess them.”
Wondering if its true? Lets have a look at some examples.
What is happiness set point?
The most important thing to note here is that circumstances do not account for most of your happiness. It is one’s genetically determined predisposition for happiness.
Now the good news, you can alter this set point by training your mind. How? lets find out.
Next time you bite into the fruit of your choice don’t forget to enjoy each bite and relish its taste in the moment such that the last bite tastes equally juicy to the first one. Your happiness does not depend on WHEN, it depends on your NOW. Best is not to attach and entangle with things, emotions and people. After all you are NOT your body, mind or emotion, right !
