“What IS”

Anaya: “Why have you made roti sabzi for dinner? We could have called for pizza today”

Sparsh: “ I don’t like to share the room with Anaya, why can’t I have my own room?”

Man: “ Why do we have only one television? Can you not get us one for our room?”

Wife: “ Can I have a smart watch instead of this boring Omega?”

Are you different? Are you satisfied with what you have and what is there at present with you? Then you are an inspiration and I would love to hear from you.

But now that you are not, why do you always focus on the what is not? And feel terrible. Why do you feel insecure of your friends facebook time and often compare with yours? Why do you pin point what’s missing instead of treasuring what you own?

Taking this discussion further, I took my children to a construction site nearby home and made them observe the children there. Do they have the luxury of choice? No.

On another occasion I took them on a metro ride away from the luxuries of a car. Another time we went to a government school near home.

Initially they did not realise why I did this to them, but a little introspection and they figured out what I was trying to tell them.

Though they need to work on their food habits till date I am happy that now they find value in what they have or are served instead of wishing for more and hence delaying their happiness.

By shifting their focus on “what is” they have learned to appreciate things at hand and “this had lead them to think on “what can be” done with the given set of parameters or options.

“What can be” is becoming a turning point in their growing up years, primarily because it ignites curiosity and creativity.

Hope this post can help you shift your focus too. To make it simpler let’s put it like this;

What is that one thing you will start appreciating from today ?

On this Thanksgiving day I give my regards to all reading this post.

Happiness and sunshine 🌼

    I attended a few sessions which was part of a program aimed at understanding our reactions and way of thinking. It mentioned that as per neuro science human brain is programmed to find gaps, dangers, and threats. This is one of the reasons why we behave this way. This is a wonderful post, Nidhi.

    1. That you Arv! For enlightening me on this. So grateful to you for this. These gaps do allow you to avoid danger and is good as long as it does not pull you down.

    I can tell you that I have a laptop which is nothing special but it does run well most of the time and I am very appreciative of it and try to take good care of it. I have enough clothes and I never go hungry for long. I’m pretty lucky really and sometimes I look back on what I have already written and appreciate it instead of always thinking of what I’m going to write or what I need to write and so on. This is an excellent post and it’s sounds like you are teaching your children some very valuable lessons. I wish you the best of luck with all you do in 2020!
